Details about this class
Welcome!
GRN201 Understanding and Ending Ageism explores ageism as a form of prejudice and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression. We will investigate the different levels at which ageism operates and the negative impact that internalized and institutionalized ageism has on individuals and society. We will also introduce perspectives and practices for combating ageism and creating age-inclusive and age-equitable policies, programs and communities.
This fully online course is required for the Gerontology Professional Certificate and for a Gerontology AAS Degree.
Learning activities include required weekly reading and discussion assignments, as well as a final capstone Applied Research Project.
There are two required texts:
This chair rocks: A manifesto against ageism. (A. Applewhite)
(Note that there is more than one edition of this book. There aren't substantive differences in the content between editions, so go with whichever edition you prefer.)
Gerontology: The basics. (J.R. Sasser & H.R. Moody) The online version is available free through PCC.
