Details about this class
Meetings:
The Zoom class meets for four hours, 2 times a week. Generally, we will have a mix of guided exercises, discussions, lectures, critique, and open studio work or individual meeting time each class period. Attendance is expected and tracked.
Course Overview:This class is a 4-credit-hour studio-based course. This painting class will expose you to various painting techniques, strategies, and visual principles. Through guided assignments, a variety of smaller studies, and demonstrations, you will experiment with the formal properties of color, shape, form, texture, and space. Through a combination of personal projects, ideation, discussions, and critique, you will develop a language to understand painting as both a formal construction and a tool for expression. In-class group Critique will engage us in the interpretation, evaluation, and analysis of works while developing a more sophisticated vocabulary and strengthening problem-solving skills.
Art 181 vs Art 281:This course is a “consolidated course,” meaning that there are 2 different levels of painting experience. Art 181 and Art 281 will follow the same basic course outline. Art 281 students or any student taking a prior 181 course will expand on their previous skills. Art 281 students will be held to higher expectations over the term. Art 281 students may have supplementary exercises and extra rubric requirements. Art 281 students, if you do not feel challenged, please talk to me and we will discuss alternative approaches to your projects.

Art 281 Students will be giving a short Artist Presentation
