Eligibility:
All PCC students are welcome to take this class, regardless of eligibility to become a Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM). Students do not need to identify as a person in recovery from a substance use disorder in order to take this class.
However, only those who identify as being in recovery from a substance addiction for a minimum of two years may later apply to become certified as a substance addiction recovery mentor. In order to later use the certificate earned through this class to apply to become a Peer Support Specialist- Adult Addictions PSS-AD and / or a Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) through MHACBO in Oregon, student applicants must be able to identify as a peer in addiction recovery from a substance use disorder for a minimum of 2 years. In regards to these certifications, "peer" is a person with similar lived experience in addiction recovery from a substance use disorder.
AD 107 Course Description:
3 credits. Addiction Recovery Mentor course presents an overview of Addiction Recovery Mentor skills, resources and evidence-based practices that have been demonstrated to contribute to successful peer mentor programs. Audit available.
This course curriculum is Oregon Health Authority OHA-approved and MHACBO-approved for satisfaction of the educational requirement of an application for adult addiction peer recovery mentor certifications. This course curriculum is approved by the Oregon Health Authority Office of Traditional Health Workers, approved by MHACBO, and has been continually updated and approved since 2013.
AD 107 is a three-credit 30-hour course. With your additional 10 hours earned by completing your work with our homework readings, homework assignments, and Online D2L Discussions Forum homework, you will earn the 40 education hours required to apply for Certification by the State of Oregon and / or by MHACBO.
After the completion of this course, the instructor will distribute a Completion Certificate indicating completion of required work totaling the required 40 educational hours only to each student who has completed all required work and who self-identify as one in substance use recovery. Each student who has completed all required work and yet does not self-identify as one who is in substance use recovery will earn a Participation Certificate and is not eligible for certification, in compliance with Oregon Health Authority Office of Traditional Health Workers.
Following successful completion of this course, a class completion certificate and your self-determined status as a peer in chemical dependency recovery for a minimum of 2 years is necessary to apply to OHA or MHACBO to become a PSS-AD and / or a MHACBO certified recovery mentor. Processes are subject to change as changes develop in certification requirements.
Attendance Policy: Students can miss no more than 2 class periods if they wish to pass the course regardless of ANY circumstances.
For fairness to all, instructor will not determine validity of ANY absences, and students should not ask instructor to do so. Absences, late arrivals and early departures will be computed into the final attendance total. A student may miss only two class periods but he or she must complete any missed exercises, assignments, videos, or classroom presentations by conferring with a student who was in attendance. This is especially important in this course as students are to earn the 40 hour certificate. This policy will be upheld with no exceptions. There will be no negotiating about missing a third week, regardless of circumstances.
Final Exam: is during the next to last class, NOT the last class. You are required to be present in person that day and participate fully in the required Final Exam, which includes participation in the required in-class role play, so there is no way to make-up for a missed final exam.
Last class of the term: You are required to be in present in person for the last class, which will be for final questions, class reflection on readings. The last class is a required class that is reflected in your grade and accumulation of the required 40 hours for certification.
