Details about this class

Hello!

Hi, I'm Dr. Lori MacKinder (most students call me Doc Lori or Dr. MacKinder) and I'm looking forward to being your Advanced Reading and Writing instructor this summer!  Yippee!

In Advanced Reading and Writing and Social Studies, we will practice reading and writing strategies. To practice these strategies, we will use content from a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. These strategies are to prepare you for your next goals for taking the Reasoning in Language Arts section of the GED® exam, and as well as support your reading and writing needs at work and in college.

This course is an online class, and therefore, we won't meet in person. Instead, we will use Zoom through our D2L site on My.PCC.edu.  Classes will be recorded in case you miss a class, so you can go back to review anything missed. The first 2 hours are class, and the last hour is for students who need extra support. You will have about 2+ hours of coursework a week.

I provide all materials, and all can be accessed on D2L. I will email you during the week before class starts with instructions to help you log onto our site and prepare for Day 1.

Use this link to access the class overview, example calendar and syllabus.

I look forward to working with you!

Technology

You will need to be able to access your PCC email, Google Drive, and D2L (online classroom) to participate in this class. If you need help accessing a computer or laptop and/or a stable internet connection, please let Dr. Lori know and she can help you by connecting you with the library at PCC and other community resources. We will also learn and practice using our PCC emails, Google Drive (Docs, mostly), and D2L (online classroom) in this class; so if you are new to it, that's okay.

This class will meet only over Zoom and not in person. You will need a stable internet connection and a Zoom-compatible device at home to be able to attend the class on Zoom, ideally a laptop or desktop computer with a working mic/camera where you can also word process and edit materials while in the meeting. But attendance is the most important thing, so make sure you can at least join the meeting.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
