Details about this class
I'm honored that you're checking out Philosophy courses and hope you'll decide to take the next step and register! For more about me and how I approach teaching and learning with you, please visit my PCC web page. You can also check my FAQ document which includes general information about my courses and policies. I update it each term, so some of it will be specific to the current academic term but many details will stay the same across terms.
- I use labor-based grading in my courses, which means that the grade you earn is up to you and the amount of work you decide to complete (there's a section on this in the sample syllabus below). While there are requirements and standards for your work, if you meet them then your work receives credit. There are due date requirements, but partial credit is available for assignments submitted past the due date.
- For more on labor-based grading (sometimes also called contract grading), check out this article.
I typically modify my syllabi from one term to the next, but here is the Fall '24 version of PHL 201. It will undergo changes before Fall (around attendance, assignments, and grades - though it will still rely on labor-based grading), but should give you a sense of my teaching approach. Generally speaking, our scheduled Zoom meetings focus on (1) clarifying theories and (2) discussing them; your work out of class will involve reading and other assignments. Lectures will be recorded, although attendance in real time at lectures will be a component of your attendance grade.
Please reach out with any further questions!
