Details about this class

Hello! My name is Cindy Rochester-Gefre, and I'll be your instructor for this course. I've taught this course Face to Face, Hybrid and Remote for the past 17 years. Each time I teach it, I learn something new.   A little about me. How did I become qualified to teach math at PCC? My education started when I was in high school.  I was raised in a small logging town in Alaska. I had the chance to work with elementary teachers to help students in math. I completed my undergraduate at Western Oregon State in Monmouth Oregon back in 1989.  I started teaching high school in 1990 and started my Masters at Portland State University and completed it in 1998.  Fifteen years ago I started taking night classes right here at PCC at the same time teaching during the day at Clackamas High School.  During this time I married and  had two children, so you can imagine how hectic that time was!  Last year after teaching 33 years  at the high school level I retired.   I decided to continue working at PCC because I still LOVE teaching.

My philosophy of teaching is that I'm a facilitator.  I believe this quote from Benjamin Franklin "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."

This is an Online (Scheduled Meetings) couse.  We will meet on Monday and Wednesday zia Zoom from 6:00 PM - 8:50 PM.

Remote and Online learning  is different from many face to face classes.  Although we don't spend time together in the classroom we do spend time together online.  You have access to me via D2L, email, Google meet,  and Myopenmath Forum. The responsibility for become proficient in the course falls on you being an active learner, communicating your needs, and being dedicated to the course work.  HOWEVER I'm here to help you along the way.   The key point is that an remote and online course like this one requires maturity and responsibility on your part. Think of me as a guide: I will be here to guide you on your journey, but you must be prepared to do the walking. I take pride in making sure students are proficient in the topics so that they can successfully complete the course. Let's Do This Together !
