Details about this class

This is an in-person class that meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:00am - 12:50pm, at the Sylvania campus.

The class focuses on case studies in ancient history, including things like ancient empires, the origins of world religions, class, gender, and slavery in ancient history, and how ancient states evolved, changed, and sometimes fell apart.  Among other ancient cultures, we consider Egypt, China, Mesoamerica, Greece, Rome, and the Ghana Empire of West Africa.

The class is a combination of lectures and discussions, with the discussions focused on historical documents (i.e. what historians call "primary sources"). The assignments consist of online annotations (i.e. note taking) of the historical documents, short written analyses, and one "normal" college essay. There are no quizzes or exams.  No prior knowledge of history is required and the readings are kept concise and focused so that there isn't an overwhelming amount of work.

Feel free to contact me at christopher.brooks3@pcc.edu if you have any questions about the class.

Technology

No special technology is required for the class, just access to D2L for readings and to submit assignments.

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
