Details about this class

Hello and thank you for your interest in G184 Global Climate Change!

I think it is important for us all to have a better understanding of the earth we live on and the natural systems around us. My goals for this course are for students to learn and understand how climate change works, why climate change is happening, how humans fit into the climate system, what we can do to adapt to these changes and what we can do to slow these changes.

Basic course information:

  • Make sure you have access to the E-Book through the library! (Paper copies might be available for purchase through the bookstore, however supplies are limited).
  • Weekly tasks & assignments include: Lecture videos (YouTube), textbook readings, online discussions, Labs and quizzes. Students who have the best success in this course tend to block out time each week for these tasks, take notes while watching videos and stay in contact with me (Gretchen) when they have questions and come to weekly Q & A office hours or set up one on one meetings when needed.
  • Interested in getting to know your instructor? Check out Gretchen Gebhardt's welcome video.
  • If you would like an example of a course syllabus, please view my Liquid Syllabus that covers the basics of the course, or this Sample Syllabus for a previous term of online G184 Global Climate Change (Note: you will need to be logged into your mypcc account to access!) Be advised: this is for a previous course that was online and will have different dates along with other minor changes - if you take this course, please use the version provided in the course D2L page once the term begins.

If you have any questions about the course, please reach out and email me! (gretchen.gebhardt@pcc.edu)

Technology

Please view the following information - it will be helpful to your success in the course:

  • Regular weekly On-Campus Lab attendance (Mondays 1-3:50pm, SCOM 308)
  • Reliable internet is very important to your success in this course as quizzes, discussions and lab documents are all provided through the course D2L Brightspace page.
  • All course documents will be provided via google docs, google sheets or pdfs. Lecture videos are typically on youtube, discussion articles are web-based or videos.
  • Students will be asked to work with documents and upload assignments to the assignment dropboxes in D2L.
  • The technical requirements for most online classes include access to a computer with a modern operating system and a supported web browser. This course requires weekly labs which are difficult to complete on smartphones as they are documents to type into each week.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
