Details about this class

Note: Beginning Fall 2025, students are required to register for the linked sections of CH221Z and CH227Z that I teach (CRN 45266 (CH221Z) CRN 45267 (CH227Z). Students must be able to attend both on campus lecture and laboratory meetings to successfully complete this course.

Chemistry 221Z is the first of a three term chemistry sequence designed to provide a year of general chemistry to science majors. It will meet transfer school requirements for such science majors as: chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, pre-medicine, and other pre-professional programs. The class consists of an campus lecture and a laboratory section CH227Z. The lectures are to provide the student with basic chemical concepts and mathematical applications to chemistry. 

Entering students should be able to demonstrate prerequisite math and chemistry skills. The student must have successfully completed CH151 or documented equivalent and must have passed college algebra (Math 111).

The class will consist of the following weekly activities. 

  • Lectures in powerpoint format
  • Online reading quizzes
  • On campus quizzes
  • Laboratory experiments and activities (Note: you must also register for the linked section of CH227Z, which is the laboratory portion of the course.)

In addition to your weekly responsibilities, you will be required to take:

  • Two midterm exams 
  • Comprehensive final exam
