Details about this class

Welcome to Bi142!

In this course we will be studying the natural history and ecology of the marine environment. Special emphasis will be placed on the marine organisms and environments of the Pacific Northwest. The laboratory focuses on the diversity of marine organisms. Throughout the course, we will work to develop critical scientific thinking and laboratory skills.

Using a flipped classroom approach, we will explore topics in weekly modules through lecture videos, required in-person lab exercises, and required in-person lecture sessions, where we will participate in small group discussions, activities, and demonstrations. We will work together to successfully build a scaffolding of understanding that serves as a foundation for marine biology and ocean literacy.

Masks will be strongly encouraged to be worn during each of our in-person meetings as a best practice to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases, and in consideration of our immunocompromised and other high-risk community members. Masks will be provided to those who need them.

We will likely take a class field trip that costs ~$10.

In addition to the 2 required textbooks, learners will need a dedicated, composition notebook to use in lab, and 3 Scantron Forms 882-E for in-person exams.

Please take a minute to review a copy of the lecture-lab syllabus from a previous term, and our Course Content and Outcomes Guide. I am happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have: mandy.cook@pcc.edu

Again, welcome!
