Details about this class
Thank you for your interest in BI 121 - Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology Part 1. I look forward to meeting you and being your guide through Intro to Human A&P :) This course surveys anatomical terminology, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, and the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous.
PLEASE do not buy textbooks:
- For lecture, we use this FREE OpenStax textbook.
- For lab, we use this FREE Bi 121 Lab Success Guide
This course is a hybrid, multimodal course that was built using the Universal Design Principle. Much of what you learn in the lecture will be self-guided, requiring a large amount of independent work to be done outside of the classroom. There are multiple pre-recorded lecture videos from multiple Biology professors at PCC with embedded multiple-attempt pre-lecture homework assignments that you complete before we meet in-person for review of the lecture material and over Zoom during our "application hour" where we apply the material we've learned from lecture towards real-world examples.
Our lab meets weekly for hands-on learning activities focused on the anatomy of the human body. Starting in Week 2, we will have weekly lab quizzes on the previous week's lab material, meaning its important you engage with the material during lab and ensure you understand the concepts we discuss. Additionally, starting in Week 5, we will have a lab project that focuses on a disease of your choosing that impacts the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. This lab project will allow you to further apply your physiology knowledge from lecture towards a real-world disease. There is also a multiple-attempt pre-lab homework assignment each week that will need to be complete for practice before and/or after the lab meeting.
These are the weekly meetings:
- The laboratory meets on Tuesdays for approximately 3 hours from 6-8:50PM in JH 110 on the PCC-Cascade campus.
- The lecture content is posted online, and we meet twice a week to apply the content:
- Tuesdays for 1 hour 20 minutes from 4-5:20PM in JH 102 and
- Thursdays for 1 hour 20 minutes from 4-5:20PM over Zoom.
If you have any questions, please email me at patrick.cogo@pcc.edu. I look forward to learning A&P with you :)
Technology
Our Thursday "Application Hour" meeting for this course requires the use of Zoom for meetings.
You will not be required to utilize the webcam or microphone function at all times, but there will be moments during the Zoom meeting where you will be working together with your fellow classmates and the use of a webcam and microphone is encouraged :)
Application Hour assignments and other documents we will be using for this course will open in your PCC Google Drive. There is also Microsoft Office 365 Education free for students at PCC in case you want to use this software for completing your assignments.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
