Details about this class

Why Take BA 206 – Management Fundamentals with Dr. Michael Hohn?
Looking for a class that’s real, relevant, and actually helps you grow as a leader? This is the one.

Meet Your Instructor
Hello, I’m Dr. Michael Hohn. I bring over 25 years of leadership experience from both the business world and higher ed. I’ve worked in senior management roles at Rodgers Instruments, Safeco Insurance, and the California Farm Bureau. So when we talk about conflict, performance, or leadership challenges—it’s not just theory, it’s the real deal.

I’ve got a BS in Business Management, an MBA, and a Doctorate in Educational Foundations and 沙巴体育官网 from George Fox University. I’ve been teaching at PCC since 2009 and have also served as Director of the MBA Program at Marylhurst University and Campus Director at Keller Graduate School of Management.

I’m a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach and certified in emotional intelligence training through TalentSmartEQ. My approach is simple: we lead better when we focus on what’s strong—not just what’s wrong. My classroom is a space where you’ll grow, both professionally and personally.

Oh—and I was once a college dropout. It took real-world work and a second shot at education to show me what I was capable of. That’s why I meet students where they are.

What You’ll Learn in BA 206
This course is built around one big idea: We manage things. We lead people. You’ll learn how to do both well.

Here’s what we’ll dive into:

  • Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling – Learn how to manage the “stuff” with strategy and clarity, while staying grounded in who you are as a leader.

  • Conflict and performance – Get better at handling hard conversations with empathy and accountability.

  • Supervision and communication – Build trust, recognize strengths, and create a team environment people actually want to be part of.

  • Legal basics – Understand workplace policies and compliance, with a lens of fairness and emotional awareness.

  • Goals and productivity – Set goals that fire people up and move the needle for your team or organization.

What You’ll Need
We’ll use two key books focused on real-world leadership and emotional intelligence:

  • Principles of Management – $36.95 if you buy direct

  • Emotional Intelligence 2.0 – around $14.57 on Amazon (as of 5/27/2025)
(Heads-up: the PCC bookstore prices are higher.)

A Fun Fact
I live with three corgis—Oliver, Aubrie, and Selwyn—who are basically chaos managers and snack-time specialists. They’ve taught me a lot about leadership (and patience).

If you’re ready to become a more confident, emotionally intelligent leader—and learn how to bring out the best in others—this class is for you.

Hope to see you in BA 206!
Dr. Hohn
