Jenny: Community and Public Health in Croatia
Hello, my name is Jenny. I am a 34-year-old student finishing up my first year here at Portland Community College, and I have the opportunity to study abroad this summer in Dubrovnik, Croatia! I am interested in taking the Community and Public Health class in Croatia because I am studying social work at PCC and plan to transfer to a 4-year institution to earn my bachelor’s degree.
This program will explore topics like Public Health Issues of Obesity, the Homeless Community, and Life Under the Siege.? I am particularly interested in visiting the Desa Women’s Refugee NGO in Dubrovnik, the capital city. This would no doubt in my mind be an instrumental addition to my educational journey and will not only benefit my future career but open my mind to different ways to be successful in public health.

Dominique: Life and Death in Ancient Italy

Dominique Gauthreaux, PCC student for Life and Death in Ancient Italy 2025, Studying History of Architecture in Rome
Hello! I’m Dominique, a college student at Portland Community College, determined to build a brighter future for myself through the pursuit of an education. After nearly a decade away from school, marked by housing insecurity, multiple unstable jobs I took for survival reasons, and personal setbacks, I returned to school in my late twenties, ready to work hard, receive an education, and reclaim my dreams. I have been accepted into the program to study ancient history in Italy this summer. This program will immerse me in Italy’s rich cultural history and vibrant art scene, and align directly with my academic focus on architecture with a minor in Italian language as I transition to a four-year university from Portland Community College.

Tarina: Statistics in Barcelona
I’ve been granted the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain for the summer of 2025! I’m so excited for this trip to further my education as a Sociologist, and have been very lucky to be awarded the Gilman Scholarship to cover my program fees.
My two remaining costs are food during my program abroad and securing a catsitter for my two wonderful kitties, Pesto and Mozzarella. These two costs are essential for my trip, as I cannot go on this trip without care for my cats and without access to food while abroad. This trip would be extremely beneficial to my education and future career as we will be studying houselessness and gentrification in the city of Barcelona. These subjects are very important to my work as a future sociologist!

Kayla: Japanese Language in Japan
My name is Kayla. I am 26 years old and live in Beaverton, Oregon. I have a dream of traveling to Japan.?When I was in middle school, I had the goal of being a game developer and living in Tokyo, so in high school, I started dedicating myself to learning the language and learning how to draw, design, and program. Although I don’t plan on being a game dev anymore, I still study Japanese at Portland Community College, still holding onto the dream of visiting—maybe even living in—Japan.

Frankie: Peace and Conflict in Iceland & Ireland
As a nontraditional student at a community college, I never thought I would have the chance to study abroad. As I prepare to transfer to a four year university to continue my journey in social research and community care, I am seeking every opportunity to engage with diverse communities and cultures, public policy, and the historical challenges around autonomy and self-determination that shape our social landscape to this day. That’s why I am thrilled to have been accepted into the Peace and Conflict in Iceland & Ireland study abroad program at Portland Community College!

Hello! My name is Felix Lilly, and I am deeply passionate about pursuing a career in medicine, specifically radiation therapy, and public health. Today, I’m reaching out with a heartfelt request for your support in helping me achieve my dream of studying abroad in Croatia.?This isn’t just a personal dream—it’s a chance to make a life-changing difference in the lives of those who need it most.
In 2007, I suffered a personal brain injury that changed the course of my life. I spent months recovering, battling against the odds, and pushing through pain and uncertainty. It was a long, difficult journey, but in my recovery, I discovered a deeper appreciation for the power of healing and the importance of supporting others through their toughest battles.
