Course Description

Explores the process of acting as a profession in a recorded medium. Focuses on current industry standards and principles within the multimedia profession for an actor. Addresses the appropriate artistic skills and business partnership elements required for employment. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students will work together to record material with various communication goals. Themes will be connected to the acting profession as it relates to independent contracting and on-set collaboration toward meeting those goals. Timelines and other technical requirements will be documented in industry standard format. Students will be instrumental in the creation of final projects that demonstrate their skills to potential clients.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Prepare materials and participate in an audition. 

  2. Research and execute an on-screen character in a scripted recorded narrative. 

  3. Prepare marketing materials and demo reel for a presentation to an agent, casting director, or director.

  4. Demonstrate time management and financial literacy as an independent contractor.

Course Activities and Design

The material in this course will be presented in a classroom lecture/discussion/demonstration format, and in-class hands-on exercises.There will be short assignments weekly, which may be partially completed in-class. Also, a longer assignment, which demonstrates techniques and skills, developed in the course.Outcome Assessments and Strategies

Projects will be the major criteria for evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on creativity, presentations, meeting assigned deadlines, and participation in critiques. Additional methods of assessment may include quizzes, exercises, assignments, and attendance.

  • Prepare materials for an audition. 
  • Learn how to meaningfully prepare and execute a role in a fully realized production.

  • Learn industry language for work in a recorded medium. 

  • Learn professional on set etiquette and work flow.  

  • Gain a basic understanding of the business of acting. 

  • Have a foundational understanding of the various pathways available for the professional actor.  

  • Have a foundational understanding of the marketing tools need for a career as an actor.

  • Discuss union and non-union work, contracts, working with agents, managers and other standards and issues involving negotiation, on screen work and other current trends.

  • Understand the commitment and life challenges the profession currently demands for success.
