Course Description

Introduces educators to effective strategies for supporting emergent bilingual students in K-12 classrooms. Examines the historical, political, and social dynamics surrounding language in education, helping educators understand how power and policy have shaped bilingual experiences in U.S. schools. Explores the value of preserving and honoring students' heritage languages as a vital part of their cultural identity, family connections, and community ties. Emphasizes an asset-based approach and research-based strategies for how educators can foster inclusive, language-rich environments that affirm students' multilingual abilities so that emergent bilingual students thrive linguistically, academically, and socially. Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize and celebrate the cultural and linguistic assets that emergent bilinguals bring.

  2. Explain the role of language in shaping identity and fostering a sense of belonging.

  3. Apply translanguaging strategies to support bilingual development in a culturally responsive way.

Course Activities and Design

Students will demonstrate their learning through discussions, group teaching presentations, and assignments that incorporate diverse forms of expression. These activities will focus on theories and research that highlight strategies for creating a positive and welcoming classroom environment that supports diverse learners in thriving. Activities will vary depending on the delivery modality.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated, and criteria developed for assigning a course grade using the following tools:

  • Student presentation of course materials and research
  • Participation in group discussions and activities
  • Lesson plan for emergent bilinguals
  • Case study of current event or resource  for emergent bilingual
  • Incorporate Translanguaging into the lesson plan
