Course Description

Covers the latest developments in Oregon statutes and caselaw including legislative changes and significant court decisions impacting Oregon’s criminal justice system. Provides insights into the changing landscape of the criminal justice system in Oregon equipping investigators to make informed decisions, navigate legal complexities, and uphold justice effectively and ethically. Recommended: CJA 210 and CJA 225. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Interpret key Oregon legal updates, including changes in the Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) and significant Oregon appellate decisions, assessing implications for criminal justice practice, procedure, and precedent.

  2. Evaluate criminal justice practices and procedures, including search and seizure, interrogation, and use of force, to ensure alignment with current Oregon legal standards and assess the risk of legal challenges.

  3. Analyze recent developments in Oregon's criminal justice law and policy from an equity and social justice perspective, considering opportunities for growth and reform.

Course Activities and Design

This course may  employ a blend of lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, guest speaker sessions, and practical exercises.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Participants may be assessed through quizzes, legal case analyses, group projects or presentations focused on an Oregon-specific legal update.
