? Supporting Student Success: Michelle’s Role as Career Pathways Coach at PCC ?

Posted by

Meet Michelle, a dedicated Career Pathways & STEP Coach at Portland Community College (PCC) whose journey is rooted in a deep commitment to student success and equity in education.

With a rich background in adult education and a passion for supporting students in their educational and career journeys, Michelle brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her path to this position is deeply rooted in her longstanding connection with the Pathways to Opportunity program, where she has been involved for years—first as a dedicated team member and now, in her exciting new role as a coach.

Michelle’s story began as a first-generation college student. After starting at community college, she discovered her passion for social services and pursued a degree in social sciences, which led her to a fulfilling career in adult education. Her early work in rural Wyoming as an adult education instructor deepened her commitment to helping students overcome barriers, particularly those from underserved communities like LGBTQ+ and migrant populations. “I really enjoyed working with students one-on-one, understanding their individual needs, and helping them work toward something positive in their lives,” Michelle shares.

When Michelle moved to Portland, she continued her work in student services at PCC’s Student Account Services, where she became well-versed in the college’s processes and student needs. This role laid the groundwork for her eventual transition into the Pathways to Opportunity program, where she has been a dedicated advocate for equitable access to education and careers.?

Now, as a Career Pathways Coach, Michelle’s role has evolved, but her passion for the program’s mission remains the same. “I’ve always believed in the power of education to change lives, and now, I’m in a position to directly help students take those next steps toward a fulfilling career,” she explains. She’s particularly proud of her work in PTO with the pilot prison education program at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, where she helped incarcerated students gain access to education and certification programs that could lead to living-wage careers after their release.

In her new role, Michelle is thrilled to continue working closely with students, supporting them as they explore various educational and career pathways. “I really enjoy getting to know each student and helping them navigate their unique journey,” she says. For Michelle, it’s all about empowering students to see education as a series of manageable steps, not necessarily a traditional, four-year path. “At PCC, we help students break things down and give them the support they need to succeed, no matter where they’re starting from,” she adds.

Outside of work, Michelle is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, camping, and trying new restaurants. She also loves escaping into fiction books when she needs to unwind. Her love for nature and her commitment to lifelong learning continue to shape the way she connects with students, always striving to inspire growth and discovery.

Michelle’s transition to Career Pathways Coach marks a natural progression in her already impactful work within the Pathways to Opportunity program. With her experience, dedication, and passion, she’s ready to help even more students succeed and take the next step toward a rewarding career.?
