Public Service Education Building

Cascade watercolorA new space to support campus and community safety

A new renovation project on the Cascade Campus will enhance the Public Service Education Building (PSEB), creating a welcoming, trauma-informed space that better supports the Public Safety team as well as staff and students in PCC’s public service programs. As part of the remodel, the Cascade Public Safety office will be permanently relocated to the Public Service Education Building, alongside the Emergency Medical Services Program, the Fire Protection Program, and campus facilities offices.

Funded by the 2022 bond, this project will enhance PCC’s community engagement with security services, advancing the college’s student-centered approach to public safety. The Public Safety offices on campus play a vital role in supporting the safety and wellbeing of both students and staff. This renovation will promote a calming and secure space that supports a sense of caring and belonging – important factors for individuals experiencing an emergency, training for emergencies, or responding to them.

The building will feature a redesigned entrance, improved student collaboration and lounge spaces, a new academic office suite, and a new Public Safety office suite, along with broader upgrades that will benefit all existing programs.

“This trauma-informed remodel will give the PCC Cascade Campus a welcoming space to support public service and emergency service programs.” Jessie Steiger, Project Manager

Trauma-informed design: Reimagining safety through space

The services and programs in the PSEB will benefit from an integration of trauma-informed design, particularly through calming design features in Public Safety meeting spaces that help individuals feel safe. Improved wayfinding, increased accessibility, natural lighting, and comfortable seating in common areas help create physical environments that foster safety, support learning, and promote a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all users. To accommodate a range of seating, study, and collaboration needs, the new design will also incorporate larger, more flexible layouts that encourage comfort and adaptability.

Rooted in purpose, guided by community

This new vision for the PSEB has been guided by input from faculty, staff, and students across the current public service programs. Student contributions will further support changes and improvements to the remodel. A series of engagements over the summer months – including tabling events and interactive experiences – will gather input from staff, students, and the community to help inform the design.

FAQs

When will the project be completed?

The project is estimated to be completed by fall 2026.

When will construction start?

This project is currently in the schematic phase of design. Construction is estimated to begin in February 2026.

What is the Public Service Education Building (PSEB) project?

The Public Service Education Building (PSEB) project, funded by the 2022 bond initiative, addresses the need for modernized Public Safety offices. A districtwide Public Safety office space study, completed in 2021, highlighted PSEB as an ideal location for these offices due to its connection with public service education programs and its proximity to the facilities and maintenance offices. Integrating the Public Safety offices into the building creates opportunities for broader improvements, benefiting existing programs.

Throughout the planning process, staff and students from these programs were consulted to ensure the updates meet their needs. Planned improvements include a larger entry and student collaboration space, along with renovated academic office areas to better serve the entire Cascade Campus community.

How will the design process engage students and community members?

The PSEB design process is informed by input from the PCC community. To provide an opportunity for feedback on the remodel, a variety of engagement opportunities will encourage reflection from both students and staff in the PSEB building. Activities such as interactive experiences and event tabling will help connect the design team with as many community members as possible.

In what ways will the new Public Service Education Building integrate sustainability?

This project includes important deferred maintenance, such as replacing the building’s roof with added insulation to meet new energy codes. Additionally, the remodel will feature modern lighting controls designed to optimize energy usage, further contributing to sustainability efforts.
