- Speaker: Dr. Amir Abedi, Western Washington University
- Presentation title: “Back to the Future? The 2025 Federal Election in Germany and Its Consequences”
- Abstract: The 2025 federal election in Germany was characterized by a growing fragmentation and polarization of the party system. It resulted in significant gains for parties on the far right and far left of the political spectrum, reviving memories of the last few elections before the collapse of the Weimar Republic in 1933. This talk will analyze the results of the 2025 election in the context of broader trends in the historical development of Germany’s party system, and will assess the impact of recent trends on the future trajectory of Germany’s parliamentary democracy.
